WhatsApp Calls Can Now Include People Without an Account

Meta has announced WhatsApp guest calling: people you invite don’t need a WhatsApp account to join. That makes it easier to arrange calls with people who don’t use the messaging service.

WhatsApp has introduced the option to invite people to a call even if they don’t have an account. According to Meta, the feature lets you connect with someone without first checking whether they use WhatsApp.

What this changes

Not everyone invited to a WhatsApp call needs an account anymore. The key difference with guest calling is that someone who hasn’t signed up for the service can join the conversation.

That could be useful for a one-time call with a client, contractor, or family member: the other person’s lack of an account is no longer, by itself, a reason to choose a different calling service. But joining a call as a guest should not be confused with getting access to all of WhatsApp’s features—the announcement is specifically about calls.

The practical benefit is less back-and-forth about where to talk. If you already use WhatsApp, it’s now an option to consider when arranging a call, even if the other person doesn’t have an account.
